Submission Grappling & Wrestling
Nogi grappling, also known as submission grappling or submission wrestling, focuses on controlling and submitting opponents without the use of a traditional martial arts uniform (kimono or gi). In Nogi, practitioners typically wear shorts and rash guards for better grip and mobility.
One key difference between Nogi grappling and grappling with the kimono is the reliance on different grips and techniques due to the absence of the kimono's lapels and sleeves. This often leads to a faster-paced, more dynamic style of grappling in Nogi, with an emphasis on controlling the opponent's body directly rather than using the gi for grips and leverage.
While many techniques and principles remain consistent between Nogi grappling and kimono grappling, practitioners of Nogi often develop a more fluid, adaptable style, as they must rely more on body positioning, weight distribution, and underhooking to control and submit opponents. Additionally, certain techniques that are highly dependent on gi grips, such as collar chokes and lapel-based submissions, may be less effective or unavailable in Nogi grappling.
